Content Redesign for Workforce Improvement and Innovation
New York State DOLDrupal CMS redesign of the entire Workforce Governance content section on NYSDOL’s agency website
Using a summary frame to articulate mission and purpose.
Workforce Governance is a section of NYSDOL’s agency website which serves as a home for workforce development service providers in New York State. This can include guidance counselors, career center professionals, educators, and more.
One of the most important things about redeveloping this content in Drupal was being able to communicate New York State’s mission and purpose of workforce development, contextualized by the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. We used a summary frame, a module found in our Drupal instance, to summarize the program with conciseness and visual appeal.
Using taxonomies and filter pages to organize and categorize content.
When there is a bulk of content to post on a website – let’s say a bunch of documents or a lengthy list of external links – it is important to think about how that content will be organized on the page, and how users are going to sift through it all.
I was able to enhance the user experience for the workforce development audience by employing the use of taxonomies and filter pages for bulk content. On the legacy site, documents and links were grouped together by headings. On Drupal, I transformed these headings into taxonomy terms and tagged content with its appropriate term. In the end, users were able to filter through the bulk content by selecting a filter term (or category), strengthening searchability.
