Content Redesign Walkthrough Training
New York State DOLA year after the COVID-19 pandemic began, staff members started returning to the office at the Department of Labor including those in DEWS. I was asked to give a walkthrough of a frequently used page which I was responsible for building during the redesign process. The content on this page consists of directives and advisories for workforce development professionals dating back many years. This was a part of many trainings that new and returning staff were required to participate in at the time.
On the legacy site, this content was displayed as a table grid of hyperlinks with the PDFs embedded for download. I took advantage of the “filter page” page type in Drupal to display the PDFs. The directives and advisories are labeled with a category. With the filter page functionality, I was able to enter these categories as “filter terms,” which I would assign to the appropriate documents. Users would then be able to access the document they need more efficiently. Also, as opposed to a table grid, I was able to add document descriptions to the metadata of the document which is displayed in the document frame.
I took this training seriously, so to prepare for it I recorded myself doing the walk-through with a script before the day of the live training. The video is available below.
